Sorry for the downtime lately, something’s up with my server. I’ve been trying to blog for a few days now, but it just wasn’t cooperating.
It’s probably pretty obvious, but I put up a new layout, it’s not QUITE done yet…consider it a work in progess. I actually did this one while the site was live, so if you visited mid-editing, I apologize for the insanity that you were subjected to. I’m trying to slim down the site some. There’s just so much stuff everywhere that it’s overwhelming, not to mention a pain in the rear to maintain. It’s time for some focus.
I suppose I’ll start at today and work backwards, since I can’t really remember, at least chronologically, what’s happened since my last blog.
Last night was Saturday Night Order-IN (SNOi), a tradition started sometime last year. This week’s adventure was Mama T’s. We relocated to Kelly’s room because it’s huge and because she has a TV. Italian food and Dead Poets Society, with some sides of inflatables baseball (an inflatable crayon and a beachball), House, ice cream, and incessant laughter – a great night indeed.
I covered Dean’s office hours yesterday with Phil. Fun times… You never really stop to consider how much HTML and CSS is programmed into your brain until you try to teach it to someone and realize that just because it’s a second (or third, 4th, 5th…) language to you, it probably isn’t for most other people. I really like TAing Intro to Web Design & Programming though. It’s one of the few times I get to hang out with out “geeks” with whom I can speak computer-speak.
SPEAKING of geek-dom: It’s been quite the eventful month in “The Adventures of Jenn’s Sucky Laptops”. After my Dell (a.k.a. the piece of crap) decided to be stupid yet again, I’d had enough. It’s not worth the stress of spending hours and hours and hours on the phone with tech support in India. Dude…I’m throwin’ out my Dell! That’s right folks…. I will soon be the proud owner of this little baby. It was my first purchase with my very own credit card… let me tell you… NOT easy! I had buyer’s remorse for DAYS! Then Phil gave me a tour of his MacBook and I fell in love. I hope it’s worth the price tag! After a bit of a delay, it finally shipped 2 days ago and made it’s way through China and Alaska, and as of 2:06PMEST on 9/17/2006, it’s sitting in a FedEx facility in Memphis, TN. I took advantage of their “Back to College” deal and got a free 2GB Nano and a free printer with it too. I don’t want the nano, so if you want to buy it from me, let me know!
As is always the case, every single part of my order came in about a week ago, except for the laptop of course. I have all of the necessary cables, protectors, printers, nanos, but no laptop. Soon enough though…soon enough. I’m also waiting on my extra RAM from newegg. I only ordered it yesterday, but that’s OK. I can deal a few days on 512MBs of RAM (*shudder*).
Before I decided to get the MacBook, I had my heart set on this baby. Since I decided to spend all of my money on the new macbook, I figured the display was out of the picture. LUCKILY for me, however, my birthday is coming up!!! My mom messaged me on Friday to see what I wanted for my birthday. Since she’s getting to me more and more tech-inept, I had to tell her EXACTLY what I wanted. No surprise for my birthday, but hell, I’d take a nice 20″ display over being surprised!
Other than that, it’s been the basic running around like a chicken without a head for me. Classes are classes. We (a few of the TAs from web design) have a bunch of classes together this semester. Being the geeks we are, of course we have our laptops in class with us. Since the classes we have together are pretty blah for the most part, we all sit at opposite ends of the room and IM each other throughout the class trying to keep each other awake. It’s always a good laugh when you IM someone across the room and you see them break out into silent laughter and then quickly control themselves as to not draw attention to the fact that they’re not paying even the slightest bit of attention to the lecture.
Last week was the inauguration of Cornell’s new President. I didn’t get to see the first part of it because I was in class, but luckily his speech went over a bit and I got to see a good portion. It’s times like this where you realize….”holy crap… I go to one hell of an impressive school.” Just watching all of the professors march out in their regalia (see my Flickr Cornell album for some pics) was so amazing! It makes you stop and think about where you are and where you could be headed. I’m really glad I had the opportunity to experience it.
In Forever-Digital Web Services world, things are looking good. I have a new client (not through the business, but through my job @ school) and a lead on another. I’ll post a link to the new client’s site as soon as it’s done. It’s basically just waiting for content right now.
So I think that’s about it. I know there was much more that I wanted to say, but I can’t really remember at the moment. It’s ridiculously gorgeous out today, so I might take good ole’ “piece of crap” (aka my laptop) outside to enjoy its last few days of life.
