Weekend Packing

I’m a big fan of the weekend/long weekend trip. Most of my family is within a 2-3 hour train ride of NYC so I tend to find myself throwing stuff in a bag at the last minute to head out of the city for the weekend pretty often.

This weekend, though, I’m headed somewhere new! My friends Matt and Brian invited me to visit them outside of Boston and show me around the city for the weekend. It’s crazy to me that I’ve never been to Boston. I’m excited to finally visit!

My trip is Thursday - Sunday, though the Thursday part is really just a 4.5 hour train ride from NYC to Boston, arriving after midnight. The world is lucky I’m not just showing up to the train in my PJs! Friday - Sunday we have a packed agenda including getting some fresh oysters, visiting the new Boston Public Market, and of course non-food-related things too!

Here’s what I’ve packed for 3 nights and 2.5 days in Boston: My Trusty Backpack

  • Sneakers (I opted for Vans over running sneakers to be slightly less casual)
  • Flip flops
  • 2 pairs of shorts
  • 1 pair of cropped pants
  • 2 short-sleeved shirts
  • 2 tank tops
  • Socks, underthings
  • No-skid socks (I always bring these when I'm visiting someone's house because I don't like walking about the house in shoes OR barefoot. It's a nice happy medium and keeps my feet warm!)
  • PJs
  • A sweater (Since the weather is supposed to be kind of variable)
  • Misc toiletries
  • Notebook, Kindle, iPad mini (You know I can't be far from my tech!)
  • Bonus items: quick-dry tank top and shorts (We may go kayaking in the Charles River on Sunday morning!)
  • Not pictured: camera, iPhone.

All of this fits comfortably into my North Face backpack. While I sometimes wish I was one of those girls with the cute weekend bag from JCrew or Everlane, my backpack has been with me for well over 10 years now (it was originally my backpack for college) and served me well. It’s not the most stylish, but we’ve had a good life together.

The arrangement of things in the top photo also kind of gives you a glimpse into how I pack. I’m a roller. But I do have some exceptions. I always pack my PJs in a roll of their own and pushed up against the side of my bag so it’s easily accessible. It’s almost certainly one of the first things you’ll need on your first night. Shirts are all stacked on top of each other and then rolled up. This keeps wrinkles to a minimum, but also keeps everything together and uses minimal space. I also rolled up my shorts and pants and put them together. As for underthings, I keep it classy in a Ziploc bag. You’ll see this in all of my packing photos. It’s not the cutest method, but it’s the most functional. I put everything in there and then sit on the bag to push all of the air out. It’s amazingly useful!

That’s it! Ok actually this is probably a little more than I would normally carry with me on a weekend trip, but I had to account for kayaking and a range of temperatures!

What do you usually pack for your weekend getaways?
